Space and Wireless Business Center (SAWBUC)

Mission

SAWBUC supports the space, wireless, and related industries through the design, development, and management of business and economic research programs sponsored by industry and government and through project-based and classroom education of prospective and practicing professionals in business, engineering and government.

Initiatives

SAWBUC, an affiliated partner of the Center for Wireless Telecommunications (CWT), houses the business resources that are available for research on the space and wireless sector. SAWBUC has expertise across the Pamplin College departments of accounting, finance, management science and information technology, marketing, and management. In addition, SAWBUC also spans the department of economics and other departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Center is focusing on the following topics:

Auctions of Radio and Satellite Licenses

  • Preparation: software and decision support tools

  • Strategy: analysis and development of bidding strategies

  • Structure: independent analysis of the rules and structure of auctions

  • Training: spectrum auction seminars

Financial / Market Data Infrastructure

  • Financial market data on space and wireless companies

  • Market data on the sector's size and its role in the economy

Broadband Information Networking

  • LMDS, LEO, GEO, integrated terrestrial and space systems

  • Wireless Internet applications

Virginia Tech Antenna Group (VTAG)

Mission

The Antenna Group's mission is to assist industry with research and development in antennas, propagation, and communication systems. The Antenna Group is part of CWT and includes the Satellite Communications Group, which has over 25 years of experience in satellite communications.

Antenna Laboratory

The laboratory is used to design and study a variety of antennas for many applications such as commercial wireless communications and government programs. Facilities include an outdoor antenna range capable of making measurements at frequencies between 200 MHz and 40 GHz, as well as an anechoic chamber capable of measuring at frequencies of 800 MHz to 40GHz. These environments include positioners for rotating antennas under test and an indoor room with instrumentation and data processing equipment. The ranges support Virginia Tech's antenna courses and research, and may also be contracted to measure antennas for industry or government.

Satellite Communications Group

The Satellite Communications Group is associated with VTAG. Satcom has over 25 years experience in propagation above 1 GHz, with special emphasis on earth-space propagation through rain. It has the most comprehensive earth-space propagation database from 10 to 30 GHz in North America accounting for rain attenuation.

Academic Courses

In addition to undergraduate and graduate courses in antennas, Virginia Tech offers a variety of other courses in electromagnetics disciplines, including radio wave propagation, electromagnetics, fiber optics and optical waveguides, and a number of related courses. Such a wide range of courses allows individualized programs of study related to electromagnetics. There are also a number of courses in the related areas of communications and radio engineering.
